Biography

He grew up in Palo del Colle (Bari). His start in the world of athletics came in 2003, practising middle-distance running. In 2006, he switched to race-walking, a speciality in which he immediately showed great talent. In 2013, he was fourth in the 20 km race at the U23 European Championships in Tampere, but was awarded bronze by virtue of the disqualification of Russian Bogatyrev. In March 2018, after a series of injuries, he won another Italian title in this distance, improving by more than a minute. He set the national record in June 2019 in La Coruña with 1h17:45, later lowered in March 2024 in Taicang (1h17:26). In September 2016, he married Fatima Lofti, a former middle-distance runner who has also now switched to race-walking. Their daughter, Sophie, was born in February 2021. He has a diploma as a commercial computer programmer and is a big fan of Japanese culture. In Paris, he is ready to defend the Olympic gold he won three years ago on the streets of Sapporo.
