Biography
Restivo first recognised his swimming potential at around ten years old, deciding to sacrifice football to spend more time in the pool. In reality, he had a natural affinity for water from as young as 7-8 months, when he would fall asleep in his inflatable ring at the beach, lulled by the waves. Nicknamed 'the Atomic Ant' for his extraordinary drive to excel by focusing on the details, Matteo's diligence extends beyond the pool to his academic pursuits, culminating in a degree in Medicine and Surgery with honours from the University of Pisa. Specialising in the 200-metre backstroke, he consistently hones his technique, always looking for more improvements. In 2018, he earned a bronze medal at the European Championships in Glasgow, setting a national record (1:56.29). Four years later, he claimed a silver medal at the Mediterranean Games in Oran. He also holds records away from the pool: in January 2021, he became the first athlete to be vaccinated against COVID-19. Heading into Paris 2024, he aims to continue his tradition: turning dreams into concrete goals.
