Biography
Matteo first picked up a golf club thanks to his father and grew up idolising the Spanish legend Severiano Ballesteros. In 2009, at just 16, he became the youngest golfer ever to win the British Amateur Championship. The following April, he made history as the youngest player to make the cut at the Masters in Augusta, finishing 36th – the best performance by a European amateur in 73 years. Shortly after turning professional, he won the Castelló Masters in Spain, becoming the youngest victor in DP World Tour history at 17 years and 188 days. His career peaked in 2013 with a win at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, often dubbed the 'fifth Major.' After years of struggle, he resurfaced in March 2024 by winning the Jonsson Workwear Open in South Africa, marking his return to the top-tier European circuit after 11 years. A great football and AC Milan fan, he is happily married to his wife Francesca, a key figure in his rise to the top of the world rankings. Securing his spot for Paris 2024 underscores his comeback to elite golf.
