Biography
He dreamt of becoming a champion when watching Australian swimmer Ian Thorpe in action, then met him in person during a training period in the Pacific. A perfectionist and lover of challenges, out of the water he is a big fan of basketball, the sport he would have taken up if father Luca had not sparked in him a love of swimming. He achieved his most ambitious goal at the 2016 Rio Games: a gold medal in the 1500m freestyle. Then came a turning point. Strong-willed in the choices he makes, he decided to start working in parallel on open-water swimming as well. However, he showed up at the Tokyo 2020 event in precarious physical health due to recently overcoming mononucleosis. He managed in any case to produce a record silver in the 800m freestyle and bronze in the 10 km. In his trophy cabinet, moreover, he can boast more than 30 medals won in various World and European Championships. Despite his advancing age, he remains as hungry as ever, and in Paris 2024, the fourth Olympics of his career, he wants to play a leading role both in the pool and in open water.
