Biography

He has rewritten the history of Italian athletics with his jumps, carving out a place for himself among the all-time greats. His trophy cabinet contains everything: Olympic champion in Tokyo 2020, European champion and world champion. An outright champion and a unique showman, he bounced back at the Tokyo Games, winning the most precious of medals after an ankle injury forced him to sit out Rio 2016. A huge basketball fan, in 2009 he took up athletics seriously, following in his father Marco’s footsteps (a finalist in Moscow 1980). The results soon followed. His honours list has a bit of everything: one world indoor and one outdoor title, three European outdoor titles and one indoor title, in addition to the one clinched in June 2023 in Poland at the 2023 European Games in Krakow as a European team title.  The Italian record-holder in the speciality, “Gimbo” made history at the World Championships in Budapest 2023, soaring highest of all with his “half-beard”. Before the final he played the drums, as he did in the band “The Dark Melody” where he delighted in a classic 1970s rock repertoire. Since Tokyo, it’s been the same old music and now he’s taking the act to Paris.
